Music holds a great impact to many communities espcially the African American community. Not many people do not realize if it wasn't for our African origins or the African American community many of society's beloved music genres wouldn't exist. Due to people not knowing this many of great musicians are not discussed but Cre8tives = United has found a way to discuss this. We are doing this through our two part series entitled The History of Black Music.

The African American community has the range to express themselves in various ways even within the same art form. African Americans have taken the art of music and has taken the time to grow with it. Music to the African American community is essential because it helped us get through many of our trying times. An example is Negro Spirituals that helped our ancestors cope and work faster through the day. From Negro Spiritual to Blues, we found another way to express our pain but it wouldn’t stop there. As African Americans migrated from the South to the North the music began to evolve more and gain more recognition. Blues artists like Mamie Smith, Muddy Waters, B.B King, Duke Ellington, and many more opened the doors for various genres to be created. Some of these genres are Rock n' Roll, Boogie Oogie, Jump Blues and genre of the week Rhythm and Blues.

Rhythm and Blues became significant in the 1950s when our second migration occurred. Many people do not know that a music journalist by the name of Jerry Wexler coined the name Rhythm and Blues. This simply means he gave this genre of music a name. Ever since R&B was given a name it has been influential to our community. Although Blues was used to express the pain and the life of African American R&B took this to another level. I know at least for me R&B has taken everything to the next level whether I'm burning incense, drinking tea, and playing Erykah Badu or if I’m going through a breakup and playing “Love” by Keyshia Cole. It is just something about R&B that depicts emotions differently. R&B creates a certain bond and helps us realize different things in our life.

All in all, R&B is a genre of music that has made an impact on many people and will continue an impact. Within this week Rhythm and Blues will play a major role in Cre8tives = United. R&B will be significant simply because every artist within this series this week contributes to the Rhythm and Blues genre of music.
